Les SUBS

This spring, an artistic team has been invited to metamorphose the Verrière of the SUBS with a monumental and organic scenography, activated by in situ performances. For three months, directors, choreographers, dancers, musicians, circus artists and students from international art schools will take turns to invest this aesthetic vortex.

Domitille Martin, visual artist and scenographer in residency at the Cité internationale des arts, is taking part in this event with the work she has designed and built with her collaborator Alexis Mérat, artist and engineer specialising in paper. Their proposal takes the form of a gigantic paper tornado to generate a whirlwind of artistic creations. Alexis Mérat explores all the sculptural and luminous properties of this very specific material in this monumental work. Domitille Martin draws her inspiration from nature and models the textures of the paper to give them cloudy forms. The creation of these large-scale works in paper is a real challenge for the duo.

Paper is a material of equilibrium, adjusted to human-scale actions, in an agreement between solidity and fragility, transparency and opacity, elasticity and plasticity, absorbency and impermeability. This search for balance is the place to question our relationship with ourselves and the world.

Domitille Martin (France) is in residency at the Cité internationale des arts through the program of the Association des Anciens Élèves de l'École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.
