Katia Kameli, a Franco-Algerian artist, and Sara Ouhaddou, a Franco-Moroccan artist, both rely on a research approach to produce their works.
Katia Kameli, in particular in her films Le Roman algérien (with Marie-José Mondzain), or the photographic series Soyez les Bienvenus, stages, through material collages or filmic montage, the role of images in the elaboration of the post-colonial national narrative. She takes hold of school textbooks or postcards, documenting the processes of covering or obfuscation.
Katia Kameli's work will be exhibited in 2020 at the Centre Pompidou and the Musée du Quai Branly (in the exhibition À toi appartient le regard et [...] la liaison infinie entre les choses), and in 2021 at the Palais de Tokyo. It has been the subject of solo exhibitions notably at the Kunsthalle Münster (2019), the Centre régional de la photographie Hauts-de-France (2018); at the Biennale de Rennes (2018). From May 20 to September 19, she presents at the FRAC - Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur her latest exhibition Elle a allumé le vif du passé.
For her part, Sara Ouhaddou exhibits in her project Woven / Unwoven embroideries made with Moroccan craftswomen, breaking down ordinary patterns – frozen as "traditional" by colonial history – and investing paradoxical media. The installation Je te rends ce qui m'appartient, tu me rends ce qui t'appartient fictionne la mise au jour de sous-sol communs et métissés dans la ville de Marseille et produits des objets diasporiques.
In residency at the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille in 2019, Sara Ouhaddou is designing an installation for the city's history museum as part of Manifesta 13 in 2020. Winner of SAMArt Projects 2020, she is featured in the exhibition Global Resistance at the Centre Pompidou. Sara Ouhaddou is a recipient of the residency program "Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso & Cité internationale des arts" in 2020 and "Art Explora - Cité internationale des arts" in 2021.
The reappropriation of "everyday" objects (from the flag to the soap), and the recovery of archives, documents, archaeological elements work to reintegrate, in particular, the presence of women in the narratives of a nation or a city, and embody the gestures that are dear to Katia Kameli and Sara Ouhaddou, translation and circulation.
