In 2020, the Cité internationale des arts and the Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) joined forces to create a residency program to support curators of the French art scene. Through this programme, they share the desire to provide sustainable support to the artistic scene in France.
Since the 2022/2023 edition, the programme has strengthened its professionalizing dimension by proposing to accompany the research projects of two curators and/or art critics through residencies centered not only on research work, but also on the implementation of exhibition, meeting and/or publishing projects at the Cité internationale des arts, in direct link with the Cité's programming team and its network.
C-E-A / Association française des commissaires d’exposition, itself in residency at the Cité internationale des arts, is once again joining forces with the program’s partners to create a dedicated event with the recipients.

Two six-month residencies (November 03, 2023 - April 26, 2024 & March 04 to August 26, 2024) are proposed, within the framework defined below.
They include:
• A research work and the realization of a project, during the duration of the residency, in co-construction with the Cité team;
• A live-in studio on the Marais site of the Cité internationale des arts, during the whole duration of the residency;
• A monthly grant of 1000 euros;
• A production and copyright budget of 3500 euros.
Two candidates will be selected from among the applicants.
In dialogue with the cultural programming team and in line with the statement of intent presented in their application, the recipients will be invited to co-construct a defined number of exhibitions and events during their residency.
In accordance with the upcoming calendar of cultural programming and the announced budget, the missions of each of the recipients will be as follows:
• To propose a free research work with at least two times of restitution during the year of the residency;
• Develop exchanges between artists in residency at the Cité internationale des arts and artists invited by and artists invited by the recipients;
• Co-constructing events of various formats (round-tables, conferences, screenings, concerts, performances, editions and publications, etc.);
• Contribute to the writing of the elements used for the communication supports in collaboration with the dedicated service;
• Ensure the follow-up of each project (budgetary, administrative, technical, production, mediation).

The call for applications is open to curators of all nationalities living in France, who are professionally active and have been curators for at least three years. There is no age limit.
In addition to evaluating the candidate’s professional background, the jury members will pay particular attention to the project he or she intends to develop during the residency and to the interest in the working environment proposed in the residency program.
The application form must be duly completed and requires:
• A note of intent summarizing the proposed project for the residency, including proposals related to the research and the program of events in co-construction, as well as the motivations of the applicant (1,500 characters maximum);
• A dossier presenting one or more recent curatorial projects (15 pages maximum);
• A CV and a written biography summarizing the applicant’s background.
The call of applications is open from April 09 to June 18, 2023.
Recipients will be announced in early July 2023.
Residency dates:
- First Residency : November 03, 2023 to April 26, 2024 ;
- Second Residency : March 04 to August 26, 2024.
A committee composed of qualified artistic personalities, a representative of the Cnap, the Cité internationale des arts and a representative of the C-E-A association studies all the applications and selects the recipients of the program.
The Cité internationale des arts is a residency centre that brings artists and culture professionals together in the heart of Paris, allowing them to work on creative projects or carry out research project in all disciplines.
The Cité internationale des arts provides an environment that is conducive to creativity by hosting residents for periods of two months to one year and facilitating contacts with arts and culture professionals.
Residents receive personalised support and assistance from the Cité internationale des arts team at its two sites: in the Marais (18 rue de l’Hôtel de Ville, 75004 Paris) and Montmartre (24 rue Norvins, 75018 Paris). Each residency is an opportunity to meet and exchange with more than 300 artists and culture professionals of all generations, nationalities and disciplines.
In collaboration with its many partners, the Cité internationale des arts calls for applications on specific themes and/or projects several times a year.
Artistic and Cultural Programming of the Cité internationale des arts
Artistic, curatorial and institutional practices are more than ever at the forefront of new ethical, societal and environmental dynamics. In this context, the artist’s residency takes on a new dimension by its sustainable and non-eventual character. It can be seen today as a possible response to the crisis: the time of a residency is both a daily moment and a singular encounter, a time of openness to others but also a moment of slowing down from the usual ways of life.
The need to share with the public the artistic reflections that emerge within a residency remains at the heart of the cultural program, as well as the artistic or curatorial research that deals notably with the notions of care, repair, the living and speculative gestures on the forms of life to come. A first public presentation of the archives of the Cité internationale des arts, designed to speak to its unique history and partners, is also on permanent view.
Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, Arts and Culture Programme Manager
Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez was previously co-director of the Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers (2010-2012, with Alice Chauchat and Grégory Castéra). Since 2019, she has been working as a professor at the Sint Lucas School of Fine Arts in Antwerp. With Elena Sorokina, she is co-founder of the Initiative for practices and visions of radical care.
The Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap) is one of the main operators of the Ministry of Culture’s policy in the field of contemporary visual arts. On behalf of the State, it enriches the Fonds national d’art contemporain, a national collection that it preserves and promotes through loans and deposits in France and abroad, exhibitions in partnership and publications.
With nearly 105,000 works acquired over two centuries from living artists, this collection is representative of the variety of artistic trends.
As a key cultural player, the Cnap encourages the artistic scene in all its diversity and supports artists and professionals through several support mechanisms. It encourages and supports creation in France in all areas of the visual arts: painting, performance, sculpture, photography, installation, video, multimedia, graphic arts, design, etc. It also contributes to the promotion of the projects it supports through the implementation of dissemination actions.
C-E-A / Association française de commissaires d’exposition aims to lead and promote all actions concerning the activity and status of curators in France, Europe and internationally. With a network of nearly 300 members since its creation in 2007, C-E-A is committed to a debate on curatorial practices in order to promote the exchange and sharing of knowledge, to federate and encourage the circulation of curators and projects.
