A key element in the work of Mexican artist Mauricio Limón seems to be his iconoclastic and aesthetic perspective that oscillates between poetry and dark humour.

Combining mockery and an observation of the banalities of life, the artist invites us to reflect on our social and human condition as he wanders through Iztapalapa, a densely populated, disadvantaged municipality located in the east of Mexico City. From a cartographic and social point of view this is a remote and deprived enclave. Its streets offer up a landscape defined by asphalt, cement, steel bars and plastic, an ensemble that creates an air of chaos which fosters creativity and improvisation.

It took Mauricio Limón de León ten years to create this accurate and emotional work.

Part of the LE PREMIER QUI RIRA exhibition programme at the Institut Culturel du Mexique, Empowering innuendos is a performance-satire that simulates the status quo that reigns in contemporary societies. In a breaking news format, two “specialists” present the importance of art in social practice, from simple entertainment to more cultural offerings, and the right to stage collective protests.

Mauricio Limón de León (Mexico) is a recipient of the Cité internationale des arts Visual Arts Committees and was in residency in 2019 at Cité.

With the participation of artists in residency Sasha Amaya (Canada) and Dardan Shabani (Switzerland).
