Beth Weinstein explores entanglements of the architectural, political and (in)visible through performances of labour in which she employs text, architectural drawing and models, situated actions and video. In the ongoing body of work, Intern[ed] (2016-), she examines F.D. Roosevelt’s Executive Orders, the spaces of internment these called forth and forms of invisibility they produced.

In partnership with the Jeu de Paume, Beth Weinstein presents an in-situ performance at the Cité internationale des arts, States of Exception. On this occasion, she draws her performance from Dorothea Lange’s images of internment and accompanies her intervention with the screening of a video in which her performance gives a new meaning to the Executive Orders by whiting out parts of the texts.

Beth Weinstein is an architect, artist, researcher and educator. Working primarily between architecture and performance, and across scales from drawing to installations and interventions in galleries, urban and landscape spaces, she invites reflections on contemporary critical issues such as climate change and spatial manifestations of injustice. She lives and works between Tucson, Arizona, where she is Associate Professor, and Hobart, Australia, where she is a doctoral candidate at the University of Tasmania. Her research and creative work have been published internationally and were featured in the two most recent Arizona Biennials.

Beth Weinstein (United-States of America) is a recipient of the Visual Arts Committee of the Cité internationale des arts.
