Drawing on the various collaborative practices that arise during a residency at the Cité internationale des arts, a place where different disciplines, generations and nationalities come together, Philipp Lange has invited several artists to take over the main building’s in-between spaces.

In the unique and different manner in which it occupies these atypical locations, in/visible reflects on the organic nature of the Cité internationale des arts, where more than 300 artists live and work together in the heart of Paris at the foundation’s Marais and Montmartre sites.

“The French novelist Marcel Proust (1871–1922) once described musicians as explorers of the invisible ("explorateur de l’invisible"[1]) – a term that can also be applied to other artistic disciplines. After all, can art not bring all that is hidden, concealed or in darkness into the light?

in/visible brings together five visual artists currently in residence at the Cité internationale des arts for an exhibition that blends into the common areas of the main building at the Marais site. Its vertical disposition following the staircase transforms the spaces between lift and corridor, studios and offices – through which people move everyday as they go about their business – into an exhibition space. These transit areas specific to the building’s 1960s architectural design that inevitably act as meeting points are now the starting point for the exhibition.

While the main objective of any residency programme is visibility, it must also provide time for contemplation. Periods of retreat and isolation are just as essential to any artistic practice as moments of exchange and presentation. Here, Laura Besançon, Luki von der Gracht, Judith Kakon, Manuel Mathieu and Letizia Romanini approach the vast field of in/visibility in very different ways, presenting empathetic offerings, intimate moments, astute observations, spiritual ideas and contrasting perceptions. Their works exhibited across several floors dialogue openly with viewers in this semi-public space.”
