Hiie Saumaa

Hiie Saumaa (PhD, Columbia University) is a specialist in dance and movement education. Her writings explore the links between dance, the imagination of movement and creativity. Her articles have appeared or will appear in Dance Research Journal, Dance Chronicle, The Journal of Dance, Movement & Spiritualities, Somatics Journal/Magazine, Journal for Alternative and Complementary Therapies, Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices and Routledge Companion to Dance Studies. She is currently finishing a book on the unpublished writings and works of art of American choreographer Jerome Robbins.

 

In 2018-2019, Hiie Saumaa was one of the first fellows of the Columbia Interdisciplinary Institute of Ideas and Imagination in Paris. In 2017, she was a Fellow at the Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. She has taught at Columbia University, New York University and the University of Tennessee. 

 

Hiie Saumaa is a certified instructor in mind-body techniques -- Nia dance, BodyLogos© technique and JourneyDance. ™ She teaches courses on sensory dance modalities, creative movement, expressive arts, meditative strength and somatic awareness. 

 

As a resident of the Cité internationale des arts, she is working on a new project on African dance. She also gives creative movement classes at the Cité - open to all levels of movement experience - and collaborates with other artists on artistic and movement projects.
