Basing his work on Rythmanalysis, a collection of essays by sociologist Henri Lefebvre, Timo Herbst examines the presence and movements of passers-by in busy locations in Paris, Cologne and Tokyo. This exhibition at the Cité internationale des arts is a presentation of his research.

Using documentary footage shot in Paris – at Rue Rambuteau near the Centre Pompidou, the very place where Henri Lefebvre himself made his observations – Timo Herbst deconstructs and then re-structures these images by processing the data to merge video and drawn images.

His installation is completed with drawings based on the script of Laszlo Moholy Nagy's film Dynamics of the Metropolis (1921/22), in which the latter describes the acceleration and simultaneity in the way we perceive the urban space. Timo Herbst transforms the script by taking into account his research on the rhythm of moving bodies in a contemporary urban environment.

Timo Herbst (b. 1982, Germany) is in residency as part of the German Federal Ministry of Culture and Media programme. The exhibition texts were written in collaboration with curator and author Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge.

This exhibition organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Paris is part of the 2022 edition of the Drawing Now Art Fair.
