***Onde fica o Brasil quando estamos “fora” do Brasil? Quando uma pessoa está online, onde ela está? O que significa estar fora, estar dentro, estar? Tentarei responder essas perguntas, mas não garanto o sucesso.***

Where is Brazil when we are "away from" Brazil? Where exactly is a person when he or she is online? What does it mean to be outside, to be inside, or simply to be? I'll try to answer these questions, but I can't promise I'll be able to.

Wagner Schwartz

The session will be led by visual artist and writer Marcia Tiburi, who is currently a guest professor at Paris 8 as part of the Pause program (The National Program for Emergency Reception of Scientists in Exile) and by Christine Douxami, in the presence of Brazilian dancer and performer Wagner Schwartz.

Wagner Schwartz

Wagner Schwartz was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1972. He currently lives in France and works in São Paulo and Paris. A dancer and performer, he questions the place of the body politic in his work.

After studying modern literature, he was part of several groups carrying out experimental choreographic research in South America and Europe.

Schwartz has created some 12 shows since 2003.  Amongst other awards, he received the APCA 2012 Prize (from the Association of Art Critics of São Paulo) in the "Best Artistic Project" category for Piranha and was selected by the Rumos Itaú Cultural Danse programme in 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2014.

His creations are cited in several books, including O fazer-dizer do corpo: dança e performatividade (The speech acts of bodies: dance and performativity) by Jussara Sobreira Setenta, 2008, and Am Rand der Körper: Inventuren des Unabgeschlossenen im zeitgenössischen Tanz (On the Body’s Edge: Inventories of the Unfinished in Contemporary Dance) by Susanne Foellmer, 2009.

He selected the performers for the 10th Sesc Dance Biennial and has been an international collaborator of the Contemporary Dance Festival in São Paulo and resident artist at the Curitiba Theatre Festival. He has performed for choreographer Rachid Ouramdane, director Yves-Noël Genod, artist Pierre Droulers and filmmakers Judith Cahen and Masayasu Eguchi.

His creation A Boba was presented at the Mostra Internacional de Teatro de São Paulo, MIT-SP, whereas Playlist, created in collaboration with choreographer Lorenzo De Angelis, was presented as part of Camping, a festival at the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin (France).

In 2018, his first novel written with the playwright Béatrice Houplain, Never together but at the same time (which has been translated into French), was published by Editora Nós. His latest creation Tumba was presented in Paris in September 2020.

The Beast (2005) remains his most emblematic creation.

The Dialogues Across the African World cycle is presented by école des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and Cité internationale des arts, and run by Dominique Malaquais (CR, CNRS-IMAF), Julie Peghini (MCF, Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis University-CEMTI), Christine Douxami (MCF HDR, Franche-Comté University-IMAF) and Sarah Fila-Bakabadio (MCF, CY Cergy Paris Université-AGORA).
