Charles W. Goolsby is a visual artist and professor of art at Emory & Henry College in Virginia, where he chairs the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. He has been exhibiting his art throughout the United States for over 40 years.
For this open studio, he exposes his current works that explore the landscape as a psychological space. Using his photographs as a starting point, he developed his images using oil painting to create works that assimilate the initial location, photographic interpretation, memories and physical process of painting into paintings that pay tribute to 19th century landscape traditions. The artist considers these works to be neo-romantic. They explore a tension between pictorial abstraction and representation.
