Emersion:
(From the Latin emergere)

The reappearance of a star that was eclipsed or obscured.
The state of a body that emerges from a fluid, from a medium.

Le Petit Robert Dictionary, 2021

Emersions: A Living Archive is a long-term project that uses past and contemporary archives to present the Cité internationale des arts, showcasing for the very first time the atypical story of this foundation without equivalent.

The Cité internationale des arts has been hosting French and international artists of all disciplines, generations and nationalities at its Marais and Montmartre sites since its creation in 1965, gradually adding to a unique collective memory.

Born of a desire to offer hospitality to culture professionals of all backgrounds in the heart of Paris, the Cité Internationale des Arts is an unparalleled artistic venue for international exchange. Today, over 30,000 artists have added to an often-overlooked creative history, but which is shared with a wider public thanks to an exceptional network of French and international partners and creative professionals.

The Cité internationale des arts tells its story, a history that echoes the world's current events in an exhibition that includes texts, testimonies and photos, as well as documentary videos from the foundation's archives.

The Emersions: A Living Archive project was launched in January 2022 with a first presentation focusing on the Cité and Europe. In 2023, the second part of this project will focus on the notion of hospitality and how it has evolved since the creation of the Cité nearly sixty years ago. The exhibition is organised around four themes that define its identity, from its creation to the present day.
