Jade De Rooster graduated in textile design from the Rhine University of the Arts in 2018. She is presenting her first solo show at the Cité internationale des arts.

Jade De Rooster’s multi-layered corpus is based on her interest in traditional craft techniques, notably the production of tufted carpets and domino wallpapers. Working from a perspective of modernisation and playfulness, she first appropriates the process, before each artwork finds its definitive expression in the way she modifies techniques and distorts aesthetic codes.

Wallpaper provides an infinite palette of possibilities for working with patterns and colours as she questions the boundaries between art and craft. Jade De Rooster is self-taught as far as this traditional know-how is concerned and takes a DIY approach to mastering each step.

Drawing on multiple sources of inspiration ranging from modifying traditional textile patterns to digital imaging, this exhibition develops on Jade De Rooster’s remarkable aesthetic experience in the small town of Jiufen in Taiwan. A series of photos taken in the same place and presented in the form of postcards addresses the notions of tourism, identity and beauty.

Jade De Rooster (France) is recipient of the C&D Residency, a Fondation Culture & Diversité and Cité internationale des arts creative residency.
