A discussion with Bahïa Bencheikh-El-Fegoun about her feature film Fragments de rêves (2017, 75’). The film, built around unique testimonies by members of Algerian civil society and archive footage of the 2011 uprisings, explores the expression of a powerful desire for freedom, social justice and peace.

The screening of the film will be followed by an exchange with its director, which will be chaired by Salima Tenfiche, who is a specialist in contemporary Algerian cinema under the Bouteflika regime.

The discussion will continue with artistic collaborator Alice Carré and director Margaux Eskenazi about their show Et le coeur fume encore (Compagnie NOVA, 2019). Their play is a truly kaleidoscopic journey through people’s memories of the Algerian War featuring testimonies gathered from relatives, associations and historians and constantly shifting between the intimate and political spheres, from testimony to acting and from reality to fiction.

The Dialogues Afriques cycle is proposed by the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and the Cité internationale des arts, and carried by Dominique Malaquais (CR, CNRS-IMAF), Julie Peghini (MCF, Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis University- CEMTI), Christine Douxami (MCF HDR, Franche- Comté University-IMAF) and Sarah Fila-Bakabadio (MCF, Cergy-Pontoise University-AGORA).
