Temandrota

Barbie caillou

Du 14 septembre au 23 novembre 2022

Fondation H

Temandrota, winner of the first Paritana Prize in 2017, is an artist from Madagascar currently in residency at the Cité internationale des Arts. He is presenting the exhibition Barbie Caillou in the Parisian space of Fondation H from September 14 to November 23, 2022.

In his practice, Temadrota uses recycled elements representing the consumerist society as well as natural elements like sap, sisal, soil, and sometimes pigments derived from animals or plants. His works have been presented at the Musée du Quai Branly in 2018 for the exhibition Madagascar, Arts de la Grande Île.

Coming from a family of hunters from the South of Madagascar, Temandrota suffered from the kéré (famine brought by drought in the south of the island). This secular tragedy has deeply influenced his creative process. As such, his works are deeply impregnated by his tandroy (inhabitants of the southernmost and barren region of the Grande Île) identity and he continuously questions the traditional world deeply rooted in orality and linked to the earth.

For the exhibition Barbie caillou, the artist brings forth oral traditions from his native village and from Antananarivo using as a focal point the popular game played in the Grande Île: the tantara vato also called Barbie caillou.
