Sakuliu Pavavalung is an indigenous artist from the Paiwan tribe of Taiwan. Today he is one of the most sought-after artists on the Taiwanese contemporary art scene, however, he considers himself as neither an indigenous nor a contemporary artist, but rather a "Pulima"*.

His work invites the viewer to explore the border between tradition and modernity. In addition to being a testimony to aboriginal culture, Sakuliu's work aims to convey a message to the international community and younger generations about Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, who have been persecuted for many years and who are still fighting today for the recognition of their cultures.

* There is no word for "artist" in the Paiwan language; "Pulima" which means "many hands", is a name given to those whose skills in arts and crafts are the most highly developed.
