Over the past decade, Soviet nostalgia has developed and taken on new forms among Russians, including the younger generation who did not personally experience that time.
New Soviet Picture is a cross-media project illustrating the experiences of those who lived in the USSR in the Soviet Union and the aspiration for the utopia of the past. The photos show places in the former Soviet republics that have not changed since the country's fall. Texts and interviews explore memories that often tell a different story than the real remains of the time.
Larisa Pelle is an artist and documentary filmmaker based in Finland. New Soviet Picture was born during her residency at the Cité internationale des arts in 2018-2019, in collaboration with Parisian photographer Olessia Venediktova. The project is supported by the Kone Foundation and the Finnish Foundation of the Cité internationale des arts.
