Baptiste Rabichon

Les chemises de mon père

from 08 October to 30 November 2019

CACN – Centre d'Art Contemporain de Nimes

For the last exhibition of the contemporary art centre of Nîmes in its current premises, Baptiste Rabichon unveils one of his most intimate research, drawing on his personal history as well as that of Nîmes. After showing his work in India and China, Arles, Paris and Roubaix, the artist returns to the city where he has his roots.

These are not strictly speaking memories: My father's Shirts do not only refer to a distant past, to an evocation of childhood or a nostalgic reminiscence - on the contrary, temporalities amalgamate, strata are superimposed on each other, mixed materials and techniques weave together images that are less like a univocal narrative than a fusional combination between the motif, the medium and an intense reflection on their alliance.

It is because here, in these Shirts, certain major issues of contemporary photography are made readable, as are the borrowings and traces that Baptiste Rabichon owes to those who preceded him. By placing some of his subjects close to the photosensitive paper thus masked, he is part of a line that could be traced back to Sir John Herschel's anthotypes or Anna Atkins' cyanotype still lifes (Baptiste Rabichon regularly uses plants, as in his Ranelagh series, Natures mortes aux silhouettes or, more recently, 17th century).
