Following in the footsteps of philosopher Édouard Glissant, Nirveda Alleck draws upon her Creole culture to develop a body of work to which the notion of identity is central and in which she questions the idea of belonging through painting, photography, video, installation and performance art. (...)

Since 2006, she has been working on a project entitled Continuum, which follows a specific particular protocol: the artist photographs the people she meets during her travels as if to record fragments of lives and unique stories. (...) Although her work belongs to the portrait genre, Nirveda Alleck brings the subject up to date and takes a fresh new approach to the question by inserting the faces of ordinary people into the very heart of her paintings and thereby investigating notions of representation and imagination.

Excerpt from Ninon Duhamel’s text written for Nirveda Alleck’s exhibition: « Car, vois-tu, tu as droit d’être obscur ».

Nirveda Alleck (b. 1975) lives and works in Mauritius. Using a variety of forms and materials, she expresses her interest in mankind in general and individuals in various contexts. For this exhibition, she worked with the French curator Ninon Duhamel, whose research work and publications focus on language and speech in contemporary artistic practices.
