For more than fifty days, hundreds of thousands of people have been on strike, demonstrating and debating. While it was the reform of the pension system that sparked this movement, this factor cannot, under any circumstances, be considered in isolation. It needs to be addressed in relation to other phenomena, symptoms and stigmas of a political and economic system that is ravaging lives, hopes and possibilities on a global level.

Systemic racism; explusion of women, men and children fleeing war zones and abysmal economic conditions; police violence; femicides; marginalization of the weakest; monetization of the teaching and research fields (LPPR draft bill); absence of response, denial and outright sabotage in the face of dramatic climate change... It is vital to show how these various phenomena are connected and, in so doing, to make common cause. The survival of our world is at stake.

In these extraordinarily difficult and yet galvanizing times – people are truly fighting – Christine Douxami, Sarah Fila-Bakabadio, Katja Gentric, Dominique Malaquais and Julie Peghini invite participants in the seminar and all those who wish to join them, to an evening of debate around the ideas of converging struggles.

In the presence of: Nacira Guénif, sociologist, anthropologist and university professor (Université Paris 8) and Geneviève Nakach, literature professor, trade union and political activist.

Seminar of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales presented by Christine Douxami, Sarah Fila-Bakabadio, Katja Gentric, Dominique Malaquais and Julie Peghini (with the support of the Ecole Universitaire de Recherche ARTEC and a government grant from the National Research Agency under the Investissements d’avenir programme ANR-17-EURE-0008) in the context of a seminar series titled Arts in Africa and the Diasporas: practices, knowledge, mobility.

In parallel, the international conference Africa(s): Urban utopias, performative utopias will be held from June 4 to 6, 2020 at the Cité internationale des arts and at the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine.
