Nge Lay & Aung Ko

Du 11 janvier au 05 février 2023

Vitrine – Cité internationale des arts

Nge Lay and Aung Ko were forced to leave their country, Burma, in 2021, following the coup. Now in residence at the Cité internationale des arts with their daughter, their thoughts and plans are forever changed.

The works exhibited here tell the story of their exile and represent a step in their personal reconstruction process. Aung Ko's drawings and videos portray her memories and daily experiences in the manner of a diary that expresses the collective condition and hopes of the Burmese people. Nge Lay presents a sculpture and a set of photographs of neighborhoods and buildings familiar to her. She also uses lithography and engraving to combine these images with her past memories and the Parisian landscape that surrounds her today, for example, the green-collared parakeets, increasingly present in Paris, a mark of the ability of living beings to adapt to a foreign environment.

Aung Ko & Nge Lay (Burma) are in residence as part of the "Institut français x Cité internationale des arts" residency programme, with the support of the Ministry of Culture.

An exhibition organized as part of Emersions: A Living Archive 2, a tale of hospitality which takes place at the Cité internationale des arts from January 11, 2023 (Corridor and Hall).
