Among the many pavilions at the 1931 Paris Colonial Exhibition, the Indochinese Pavilion was probably one of the most spectacular. Paintings, sculptures, furniture, and decorative objects attracted the public's attention and integrated various private collections and French State collections.
Through this lecture, writer and researcher Chuong-Dai Vo will focus on this particular context and analyze the invention of Vietnamese modernism and the creation of an art school as a site of transformation and innovation. The artists discussed will include Nguyen Nam Son, Le Pho, Le Van De, and Nguyen Phan Chanh.
