Maria Renee Morales Garcia is a Guatemalan artist who has been living and working in Germany since 2015. Their work deals with identity from an intersectional, decolonial, and queer-feminist perspective. By questioning their personal history and roots, Renee invites viewers to reflect on their position and its political impact. Social origin, privilege, race, belonging, capitalism and colonialism are the subjects the artist most frequently addresses. The never-ending spiral of self-awareness is represented in their work through layers of textiles, plastic sheeting, beads and other tangible materials.
Several questions crystallize into one: how can the privilege of creating art be used as a force for collective liberation? The answers remain open to interpretation and visitors are encouraged to share their thoughts with the artist by using the box and materials provided.
Maria Renee Morales Garcia (Guatemala) is currently in residence at the Cité internationale des arts with the support of the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research and the Academy of Fine Arts, Münster, Germany
